There are many flying drones these days, and selecting one can be tricky if you are new to the drone scene. From ones that are quick cash grabs and provide not so much value to the user to quality drones worth buying, this guide will cover a few things to keep in mind when it comes to drone purchasing.
Your Environment
One of the major factors of drones to consider is the environment. Where do you plan to go with your drone? In cases where you want to use a drone indoors, you can get away with a smaller drone. If you want to go outside with the drone, you’ll have a better experience with a larger one which is more stable. Naturally, there are drones that are good for both indoor and outdoor so you can consider those if you aren’t sure.
Level Of Experience
If this is your first time using a drone, you may want to consider going for a cheap drone. The lower priced drones aren’t exactly quality in the sense that they don’t have a lot of features. In the eyes of a beginner, this means they’ll have an easier time to operate. This isn’t the case for those who have experience flying drones.
Some features to consider when starting out are the headless mode and auto take-off features. Also, it doesn’t hurt if you can find one with auto-landing abilities for making landing easier on you.
Materials & Instructions
This is where the quality really comes in. A drone that’s easier to operate can still be quality if the materials are good. Still, you need to be careful as a lot of the cheaper drones are known for using ordinary or ABS plastic. This doesn’t work very well and you may find yourself throwing out that drone a few weeks later. Instead, if you want to go cheap, pick out one with stronger ABS plastic alternatives.
On the other end of the spectrum, you’ve got carbon and fibreglass drones that are quite durable but cost more. When shopping for higher end drones, avoid aluminium at all costs as those are lower on the quality scale.
The materials are nice, but you might also want to consider whether you have to build the drone yourself or not. Obviously, for beginners, you want a drone with little assembly or if you are someone who wants to not have to worry about putting the drone together.
Replacement Parts
Regardless of the material, drones will break as we use them. It’s a given with every item. What should also be considered in your analysis is how available the parts of your drone are. Not to mention the price. Important parts to consider looking around for are propellers, controllers, motors, batteries, and the landing gear. You might get lucky and there might be some Amazon retailers selling them, but that’s not the case with everyone. Some use unique parts to the drone which can cause issues.
Flying Time
Last but not least you need to consider flight time of course. After all, this is what the drone was made to do. Unfortunately, some of the drones are only capable of flying for 4, maybe 5 minutes at most. This isn’t going to help you if you are using the drone for a specific project.
At the same time, the best drones on the market are ones that can fly between 15 and 25 minutes. They’re more expensive, but that should give you plenty of time to get some use out of it. Furthermore, manufacturers sometimes include extra batteries so you can prolong that flight time too. Aside from flight time, you will also want to consider how long it takes to charge the drone up.
